Heavens open up and save us from windbag

On a recent afternoon in Pretoria, after hearing several speeches at a function, a windbag gave the vote of thanks.

Instead of doing the task that he was asked to do, the windbag went on and on. He brought in his own thoughts on the topics that had been discussed, put forward his pet theories and droned on about his tired, worn-out ideologies.

In fact, he put all the attention on himself when he was supposed to thank those that made the event possible. Continue reading “Heavens open up and save us from windbag”

Man with mental disability finds meaning through satisfying occupation

Photo by LinkedIn Sales Navigator on Unsplash

A middle-aged man who has suffered from a bipolar condition for many years has found meaning and satisfaction in a job suited to his temperament.

For reasons of privacy the man’s name cannot be disclosed. His bipolar condition struck while he was attending university. Some time later he was able to consider what he would do as a profession. He became a sales representative for a cleaning materials manufacturer.

He has built up a strong customer base, selling to restaurants and other small businesses that require cleaning materials. He is proud of his weekly sales success and is always keenly planning his sales calls and doing his bookkeeping on weekends and ordering stock on Mondays.

Selling, one of the oldest professions, can be suited to people with mental disabilities. It requires empathy with customers and negotiation skills. Own transport is important but when the man with bipolar needs to make sales calls outside of the suburb where he lives and serves customers, then one of his parents takes him on his sales calls. He has a driving licence but because of his attention span, he prefers not to do regular driving. Sometimes when his parents are unavailable, he uses the Uber taxi service.

Even though this man with bipolar suffered severe disappointment of not being able to complete his in-residence University studies, he obtained his BComm Degree through the correspondence from the University of South Africa (UNISA).

Please remember that this type of work is best suited for someone with a mental condition who has a relatively high level of functioning. Low and medium functioning people with mental disabilities, may find it difficult or too challenging.

Business radio jocks, business advisers and other small business myth makers

Copyright Chesney Bradshaw

A business radio jock asked a business consultant what were the three most important things for the creation of small enterprise. The business consultant said they were access to finance, access to markets and access to business knowledge. Yes, there is some truth in this but it was interesting that the business adviser started off with access to finance. It came in late to the conversation but one wonders whether or not this business adviser is attached in some way to a lending institution. Access to markets makes it sound as if there were people or other institutions preventing the small business owner from entering a market. In a free market the only real barrier to entry is competence and economies of scale. Access to business knowledge is an interesting one because to get real business smarts, you don’t have to attend a business course. Real, actionable business knowledge and information can be found from those who have run small businesses, creating them from scratch and business mentors. Selling snoek at Kalk Bay harbour for 25 cents each

Long-time Kalk Bay fisherman “Riemhou”.

Many years ago before Kalk Bay harbour was commercialised with restaurants who buy their fish from commercial fisheries in Cape Town, the harbour was a real fishing harbour. Boatloads of snoek, yellowtail and bonito (katonkel) were brought to the quayside for sale from the boats.

In those days there were so many boats in the harbour that skippers had to queue up while the boats ahead of them threw up their catches onto the quayside.

One summer in the mid-1970s, I went out fishing with my father on his ski boat for snoek outside Glencairn. The snoek was so plentiful that we all filled the fish hold and decks, ran to Kalk Bay harbour and sold our first boatload. Continue reading “Selling snoek at Kalk Bay harbour for 25 cents each”

What to do when your business idea fails

Terminal decay. Photograph by Chesney Bradshaw.

A small business owner in a radio soapie sunk all his money into a new business idea – ice cream making – and suddenly found out that the product was being rejected by customers. He found himself in deep trouble, desperate about what to do next.

In this economy, many small business owners are facing the same challenge. They have invested all their money into a new business and it isn’t turning out as expected. Before long they realise that all the money that they sunk into their business idea has come to naught. Continue reading “What to do when your business idea fails”

Myopic mindset contributes to Cape water crisis

We experienced first hand the water crisis in the Western Cape at a small seaside town during the December-January holiday season.

On arrival, the friendly owner of the self-catering unit presented us with the municipality Level 6 Water Restrictions. He gave us an old-fashioned sand egg timer and told us to keep showers to under one minute. Continue reading “Myopic mindset contributes to Cape water crisis”
