It can be lonely operating a one-person business. Where do you go for business advice, especially when you are faced with difficult problems and challenges in your business? Who can you trust?

One entrepreneur who runs a retail homewear store and online shop has been able to overcome the depths of loneliness that solopreneurs feel. She shares retail space with three other business owners. They are able to split the rent and have a roster so that owners can take a break. This arrangement also gives the solopreneurs an opportunity to work on their business rather than in their business. Can you really start a small business without a strong team?

A Malaysian social entrepreneur went for a holiday at a remote coastal village and discovered that the local people were in need of homes. So he began to put a concept together of building modular homes that could involve volunteers assisting communities to build homes. But everywhere he went he could not find architects or civil engineers who could help him realise his vision.

Eventually after about eight months he was at a dinner with extended family and by chance he happened to mention what he was trying to do and one of the family members who owned and ran a construction company suggested that he meet with his management team and specialists to come up with a concept. Can you succeed as a lone wolf business person?

The more I think about it, the more I am convinced that trying to be alone wolf small business operator doesn’t work.

If you take yourself back to a time when you were struggling on your own, you may remember how hard things were.

Go back to when you were just starting out in your own business. What did it feel like working on your own? Didn’t you find that it took your time, too much time, to learn through trial and error what you could have learnt with someone helping you?
