A short story

Bill had been playing an endless game of cellphone tag with Eve Lynn. Every attempt to meet her ended in frustration—she was always busy or needed more time. He couldn’t help but wonder: was she genuinely unavailable, or was she simply uninterested?

Bill found himself obsessing over her. She was charming, intelligent, and stunning, the kind of woman who lingered in one’s mind long after a brief encounter. Despite her evasiveness, he couldn’t shake the hope that they might connect—until recently. With each unanswered text and politely declined invitation, Bill began to think it might be time to let go.

But fate, it seemed, had other plans.

On a whim, Bill decided to attend a local play at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg. It was a quiet evening, and he went alone, as he often did. Being single gave him the freedom to do as he pleased, though sometimes, that freedom felt like loneliness.

The theatre was warm and inviting, its charm enhanced by the gentle hum of pre-show conversations. Bill settled into his seat and noticed the woman next to him. She was about his age, neatly dressed in a stylish blue dress, a shawl draped elegantly over her shoulders. Her hair was perfectly styled, suggesting she’d made a special effort to look her best.

They exchanged polite smiles, but Bill’s attention quickly shifted as the lights dimmed and the performance began.

At the interval, Bill made his way to the bar for a drink. And there, standing just a few feet away, was Eve Lynn.

His heart raced as he approached her. “How are you enjoying the show?” he asked, trying to sound casual.

Eve Lynn grimaced. “I can’t stand it,” she said, shaking her head. “I thought it would be something completely different. This just isn’t my kind of thing.”

Bill couldn’t help but laugh. “Well, that makes two of us.”

They spent the remainder of the interval chatting. For once, Eve Lynn seemed relaxed, her guard down. When the show ended, Bill offered to walk her to her car. As they said their goodbyes, she handed him her phone. “Here,” she said. “Let’s exchange numbers.”

That night, Bill was on cloud nine. Meeting Eve Lynn had felt like a stroke of luck, and exchanging numbers felt like a small victory. He wasted no time texting her the next morning, suggesting coffee at a local café. But her reply was disappointing: she was busy.

Undeterred, Bill tried again a few days later, inviting her to dinner. Once more, she declined. By the third rejection, his excitement had turned to frustration. Maybe she wasn’t interested after all. Reluctantly, Bill decided to stop trying.

Then, out of the blue, a WhatsApp message arrived one quiet Sunday morning. It was from Eve Lynn.

“Hi, Bill. Are you free for lunch today? There’s a new restaurant I’ve been wanting to try.”

Bill nearly fell out of his chair. Was this a joke? After weeks of silence, here she was, inviting him out? He quickly typed a reply before his nerves got the better of him.

“I’d love to,” he wrote. “What time should I meet you?”

As he sat back, staring at the screen, Bill couldn’t help but smile. Maybe, just maybe, this game of cellphone tag was finally coming to an end.
