I remember the first time I watched the Eurovision Song Contest. I was visiting a friend and his girlfriend in Stockholm, Sweden. We had a delicious supper—moose that he had shot himself—followed by a wonderful red wine. I’m exaggerating, probably, but I don’t think anybody was out in Stockholm that night. Everyone was glued to their televisions, watching Eurovision.
The excitement was incredible. And what freaked me out was that in my own country, hardly anyone knew about it. I never saw it in the newspapers, no news reports, nothing. But for Europeans, it’s a huge event—full of music, drama, and unforgettable performances.
This year, I’m particularly excited about Ireland’s representative, EMMY. It’s a bit controversial because she’s a Swede, but who cares? Talent is talent! She’s bringing “Laika Party” to the competition—a song inspired by Laika, the Soviet space dog sent into orbit in 1957 and left to die. It’s a beautiful yet bittersweet tribute, blending disco vibes with deeper emotion.

Who Won Eurovision 2024?
Last year’s winner was Nemo from Switzerland with the song “The Code.” It was Switzerland’s first Eurovision victory since 1988!
A Brief History of Eurovision
Eurovision began in 1956 in Lugano, Switzerland. Back then, just seven countries participated, and Swiss singer Lys Assia won with the song “Refrain.” Today, Eurovision is a massive international event, showcasing the best (and sometimes the weirdest!) music from Europe and beyond.
