OPINION: The Aquila Column — Why is it so hard to change car insurance in South Africa?

Shopping around for car insurance sounds simple enough. Who doesn’t want to save on their monthly premiums? But the reality is more complex. I’ve tried to cut my vehicle insurance costs, and every time I’ve looked at new quotes with my broker, the numbers always seemed to work in favour of me staying with my current insurer. Funny how that happens, isn’t it?

Sure, some people tell you that they have slashed their premiums by half or more. What they don’t mention is that they’ve likely increased their excess, cut out key benefits, or signed up for subpar service when something goes wrong. The lower price might seem appealing, but when you’re stuck dealing with a claim, you’ll want more than a budget deal.

Take my own experience. I once switched to a lower-cost insurer, thinking I was making a smart financial decision. But after an accident, I quickly learned the downside. I had to take my car back for repairs twice. The panel beater wasn’t top-tier—they were on the insurer’s list of preferred service providers, chosen more for cost-cutting than quality. By the time the repairs were finally done properly, I’d wasted hours, if not days, of my time.

Insurance brokers add another layer of complication. Often, their advice leans toward sticking with your current insurer. They claim it’s because they know the quality of service you’ll receive, but let’s be honest: they often have a vested interest in keeping you on the same policy. The relationships and commissions involved rarely benefit the consumer.

The entire system is designed to be confusing. Policies are filled with technical language that’s difficult to interpret, and comparison tools don’t make it much easier. They give you the headline number—your monthly premium—but don’t always clarify what’s been removed from your coverage or how much your excess has jumped.

In the end, switching car insurance is about more than just finding a lower premium. It’s about balancing cost with coverage and service. A cheap policy might save you now, but the real test comes when you need to make a claim.

Shopping around for insurance may feel like a hassle, but it’s worth it if you want genuine value. Just remember, price is important but quality of service and comprehensive coverage are worth paying for.
