When I have visited the small coastal town of Fish Hoek in the Western Cape I have noticed local artists selling their paintings in shopping malls. What stands out for me is the wonderful, almost idyllic, beach scenes. The beaches are pristine, the sea blue and the mountains fresh and vibrant. It’s a kind of unreal world that reminds one of how things used to be, not as they are now.

You never see these local coastal scene artists with paintings that depict the rough reality of today. Go for a walk on the beach and you likely to see pickpockets and sunbathers leaving their trash in the sand. Go up a little further to Jagger’s Walk where the subway is and you will catch the stench of urine and find unsavoury characters lurking in the shade of the tunnel. This is not to say that the beaches aren’t cleaned up before the holidaymakers arrive but with high-density urban living the picturesque coastal towns just aren’t what they used to be. But many people would rather have the idyllic coastal painting than the sordid reality. Continue reading “Small business reality series – what information or advice to can you trust?”

Who do you trust when it comes to small business advice?

Death_to_stock_communicate_hands_9Not too long ago financial advisers were unregulated but because standards were lacking in the industry they eventually had to write financial adviser exams and be registered. Too many customers were advised on investments that were not in their best interests. In these times with the increase in the number of small businesses and entrepreneurial ventures, the number of small business advisers has grown. A reader who wants to find a business opportunity asked me to tell him about a specific business he could pursue in the city where he lives.

It’s not possible for anyone to tell you what business to go into just as it would be foolish to choose a house for you. Imagine that.

When you are in a financial position to buy a house of your own you will go searching for properties until you find one that you really love. It may take several weeks or even months before you find what you want. You could look at 10 properties or more than 20.

You are going to be very excited about the new home you have found for yourself. You will tell your friends and family. You will begin to feel proud about what you have bought. Your home tells a lot about you and your values, hopes and dreams. Continue reading “Does it pay you to hire an architect?”

Where do you find a trusted adviser?

Trust

I worked for a food manufacturer one time. For me this was almost a dream job because I love food and come from a family who loved food. But one day my boss called me into his office to give me bad news. He would be retrenched and so would about 100 others from various companies functions. I was included in that number.

Suddenly I was in shock. My world was upside down. Let’s face it, most people rely on a salary to support themselves and their family. In a few days that would be gone. I had two children under five to support.

It was with a deep sense of betrayal that I tried to cope emotionally. In a few moments the world I had known was gone. The future I had seen had disappeared. I felt utterly and totally alone. Continue reading “Where do you find a trusted adviser?”

Small businesses unattractive to job seekers (maybe it’s a good thing)

This image was selected as a picture of the we...

The other day I was reading about how almost 1.12-million job seekers take the National Public Servant Exam in China.

But only 19,000 positions are available. It means fewer than one in 50 candidates will be successful.

Chinese graduates are so desperate for these public servant jobs that they turn to plastic surgery for an advantage. One clinic offers noses inspired by the Eiffel Tower.
