How many names of monkeys do you need to know?
Do you have to know all of them?
Should you be able to pronounce the names of all of them?
This might sound ridiculous, but we best be aware, as one day legislation may be passed, where you have to know all the names of all the monkeys in the world.
It could be, or it probably will be, a new wave that brings about change for the better?
As they say, times are changing and we have to change with them.
As far as research on the internet goes, there are over 300 species of monkeys.
Monkeys are broadly divided into Old World species—160 species, and New World species—174 species,” Jessica A. Mayhew, PhD, assistant professor of anthropology and museum studies, and director of the Primate Behavior and Ecology Program at Central Washington University, told the Reader’s Digest in a 2019 article.
Therefore they reckon that there are a total of 334 species.
Others put it at over 260 species of monkeys, belonging to two main groups: New World monkeys and Old World monkeys.
Surely one could get along with just knowing a few monkey names such as those found where you live?
However, there are those with the desire to learn the names of all monkeys in the world could stem from various interests, including but not limited to:
- Scientific Curiosity: Some individuals are fascinated by primates and their behavior, leading them to study and learn about different species 2.
- Conservation Efforts: Knowledge of monkey species can be crucial for conservation efforts, as it helps in understanding their habitats, populations, and threats they face 7.

- Taxonomic Classification: Correcting misconceptions about the classification of primates, such as the distinction between monkeys and apes, can be a motivation for some individuals 14.
So, unless you have a special interest in learning the names of all the monkeys in the world, then perhaps it’s best to know some of those that are prevalent in your region.
Unless it becomes law to know the names of all the names of all the monkeys in the world, in the workplace or in other institutions, you could get along with a short list.
The Cape Peninsula, located in South Africa, is not known for its diversity of monkey species. The most common monkey species found in the region is the chacma baboon (Papio ursinus). Baboons are not technically classified as monkeys but rather as Old World monkeys.
Thank goodness I only have to learn the name of one monkey species … until it becomes law to know all of them.
I’m safe for the time being but for how long I don’t know.
