What fights should you choose and which ones should you avoid?

It’s difficult to stand back and do nothing when your interests are threatened. But at the same time, you need to know which fights to avoid.

Make no mistake, it takes a lot of mental work and emotional energy to get involved in a dispute. It can exhaust you.

More than this, it can impact on your resources, such as finances. That’s why I’ve learned to let certain things ride and not get involved in them, especially personal relationships. For example, there was a recent case where family members were in dispute. I didn’t want to be drawn into the problems, even though I was a lifelong friend of the family.

Sometimes you need to know whether people want you to listen to them or whether they want advice from you. There’s a big distinction. At times people just want an outsider’s ear. And that’s OK. But as soon as you start giving advice, you become involved. You can so easily get the blame for things going wrong if you do give advice.

When it comes to material interests, things that are going to influence the quality of your life and your well-being, and you know the other side is wrong or is doing something illegal, then you may have to enter the fray.

But even then, it’s important to think of the ?consequences. How long will the dispute last? Do you have enough emotional and financial resources? What if things turn nasty? What if the other party seeks retribution? And this could take the form of anything from damaging your property to threatening your life.

So you have to tread with extreme caution.

Another point is if you try to let things pass over and you don’t do anything about it, you will merely continue to suffer. And it might be for years.

So this is where you need to be extremely strategic. Plan your strategy and your actions and go over them several times before you initiate anything.

I thought I’d share this because it’s something we often don’t talk about. People like to party and talk about the weather or the state of their community, province or country. They often avoid talking about this important subject.

I’m not trying to give advice in this post. Every time you face a potential dispute you need careful thinking and if you do get involved careful planning. ?Disputes are best avoided. Often things will sort themselves out over time.

Choosing which fights to engage in to defend your interests depends on several factors, including the importance of the issue, the potential impact on your goals, and the likelihood of success.

It’s generally wise to prioritize battles where your interests are directly at stake and where there’s a reasonable chance of achieving a positive outcome.

Additionally, consider the potential consequences of engaging in a fight, such as resource depletion or damage to relationships.

Conversely, it’s advisable to avoid fights where the stakes are low, the issue is not central to your interests, or where the likelihood of success is slim. Additionally, it’s wise to avoid engaging in conflicts that could escalate into harmful or protracted disputes without a clear benefit to your objectives.

Strategic thinking and careful consideration of the potential risks and rewards are crucial in determining which fights to pursue and which to sidestep.
