We’ve all heard it. Sometimes it’s wrapped in concern, sometimes in confidence, sometimes in a voice that sounds wise—until you actually do what they say. Then you find yourself wondering, “Why did I listen to that uncle/aunt/YouTuber/friend-who-means-well-but-has-no-life-skills?”
The Thing About Stupid Advice
Some people give advice because they want to help. Others want to feel important. And some—bless them—don’t know what they’re talking about, but say it with such conviction that you almost believe them.
There’s good advice out there, sure. But today we’re talking about the bad stuff. The really dumb, potentially life-ruining, head-scratching nonsense that somehow keeps being repeated like a bad song stuck in your head.
Let’s start with one I still remember from years ago:
“Enjoy today, worry about tomorrow… tomorrow.”
Sounds deep, doesn’t it? A little poetic, even. Until you wake up with no money, no plan, and no clue. That’s when tomorrow becomes today—and now you’re panicked, broke, and potentially bumping along the pavement.
A Roundup of Terrible Advice People Keep Giving
Here’s a list of common pieces of advice that range from mildly unhelpful to “please never say that to anyone again.” See if you recognize any—or better yet, see if you’ve been given any of them:
1. “Money isn’t everything.”
Maybe not, but try living without it. Money might not buy happiness, but it buys time, choices, dignity, and petrol.
2. “Just quit your job and follow your dreams!”
Yes, right after I pay rent with my dreams. Quitting cold turkey without a plan is not noble—it’s reckless. Build a bridge while you’re still employed.
3. “True love is unconditional.”
Only if you’re a golden retriever. In real relationships, boundaries, mutual respect, and accountability matter.
4. “Just be yourself.”
Depends on the self. If “yourself” is late, rude, and unteachable, maybe work on being a better self first.
5. “Always follow your heart.”
Your heart wanted ice cream at 2am. Your brain said no. See the problem?
6. “Do what you love and the money will follow.”
Not always. Do what you love and learn business, marketing, taxes, and networking—then the money might follow.
7. “You don’t need internet security on a Mac.”
Yes, you do. Cybercriminals don’t care what laptop you bought. They just want your login details.
8. “Ignore it and it’ll go away.”
This works for clingy pigeons, not for debt, health problems, or toxic people.
9. “If they can’t handle you at your worst, they don’t deserve you at your best.”
Translation: “I don’t want to improve, and you’re not allowed to leave.” Yikes.
10. “Once you’re married, looks don’t matter anymore.”
Why not? Shouldn’t we always want to look and feel our best—for ourselves and our partner?
11. “Lie a little about your number.”
If you’re lying to protect someone else’s fragile ego, maybe you’re with the wrong person.
12. “Charge it! Everyone’s in debt.”
And? Everyone having a headache doesn’t mean you should hit yourself with a brick.
13. “You got a raise—go upgrade your life!”
Or maybe… save. Invest. Pay off debt. And then maybe buy the shinier toaster.
14. “Take out a student loan—you’ll pay it off easy.”
In which alternate universe? Student debt can stick around longer than some marriages.
Stupid advice is like junk food. Easy to consume. Hard to digest. And too much of it will hurt you in the long run.
