Companies seek out smaller brands and milk them until they die. Big companies don’t in general come up with products and services. ?Some products thrive. If they didn’t, you wouldn’t have a job or a pension. That’s the simple logic behind products and companies. They exist primarily to provide value to customers — foodstuffs, hard goods, technology — and share value and dividends.
An entrepreneur comes up with an idea, runs with it. When it gets too big, they cash in and sell out. Not in every case. Think Steve Jobs. He must have known that his company was going to be big. Think Bill Gates. He’s hung on to his company.
But many others are sold off. A bunch of professional managers run that company or brand. Some make it a cash cow. Others run it into the ground.
Products are milked until demand slows or declines. Companies turf products. Think “Koo Sousboontjies” or bean sauce.

Why Do They Disappear?
Brands and companies disappear because they fail to adapt to competition and technological shifts. Management incompetence often accelerates the decline. They lose consumer relevance, sales slide, and financial performance follows. Once they can’t maintain a competitive advantage in a changing environment, the outcome is predictable: they vanish.
