It was an historic event on Thursday, 25 January 2024, when one or two orcas swam into Kalk Bay Harbour and surfaced in various places.
There was a flurry of cell phones as locals and tourists took photographs and videos of the orcas gliding into the harbour, going under water and surfacing in various spots.
This is the first time that I’m aware of orcas swimming into Kalk Bay Harbour. Of course, there may have been occasions in the past that I’m unaware of.
Orcas hold a special place in my heart. They are very big mammals and I don’t know what it is, but they just bring excitement to me when I see them. I think it’s being awestruck by such a large ocean-going ?mammal.
But it goes deeper than this because orcas do a lot for the environment. Shark lovers don’t like them because they attack great whites and eat their livers. Very interesting how humans judge the natural world, which has got nothing to do with them.
Projecting human emotions and feelings on ocean-going mammals seems ludicrous.
Anyway, as I say, I’m amazed by them. I even recently did a charcoal drawing of an orca and thoroughly ?enjoyed doing it.
There are many interesting facts on orcas, but one of them that I find fascinating ?is that they sleep for one to six hours in the water in a pod where they synchronise their breathing as they slowly swim. Imagine that. Synchronised sleeping.
Apparently they have very large brains. I wonder if they are more intelligent than the human species. Who knows?
But this brings me to a point that I find important and that is if you’re writing fiction, non-fiction or any form of ?business writing, you should be interested in your subject.
Now, in many cases, business writing is not perceived to be as interesting because it deals with money, the acquisition of money, the investment of money and the loss of money. It also involves all the operational, logistic and human issues involved in businesses and, of course, marketing and selling.
So my point is, business writing can be interesting. ?I remember being an avid reader of Business Week when it really was one of the top business publications. Nowadays, probably the Economist and the Financial Times hold the top places in business reporting.
You don’t have to be a top business reporter to write business communication well. You can write to a colleague or a boss in an interesting way. There’s nothing telling you that you should be dull and boring.
In fact, with so much entertainment available to people on their cell phones and other media, people expect to be entertained. At least don’t shy away from messages that include entertainment. But you have to be careful about entertaining. It’s a skill in itself, learnt over time.
