I was on the beach this morning, talking to a shark spotter. We were speculating about which species of shark came into Kalk Bay Harbour on Thursday last week, which prompted the orca to come inside the harbour.

The shark spotters had their own information and I listened to a recording of one of the shark spotters from Kalk Bay saying that they had seen a smallish shark leaving the harbour after the orca left.

We then got into a long chat about orcas and what amazing creatures they are. While we were talking about orcas and sharks, a young woman came to us and asked for directions to Kalk Bay Harbour.

She told us that she left the cold weather in London last week and would be staying in Cape Town for a month. She came out together with a team of colleagues because the company she works for had sent them all out here to work online from Cape Town because of the good weather.

She asked about highlights to see in Cape Town and we gave her a number of special places to visit around the southern peninsula.

What a morale booster, I thought.

Imagine that a company that thinks about their employees’ morale to such an extent that they fly them out from London to spend a month working online in Cape Town.

All of this is made possible by technology. Afterwards when she left, the shark spotter and I spoke about how technology has advanced where remote working anywhere in the world is now possible.

In the bad old days, you couldn’t leave your office or workstation for an hour and you’d be in trouble. Of course, in those days you wouldn’t be allowed to work from home. In those days, bosses were clock watchers and if you were late for work, you would hear grumbles or you may have even received a warning.

Look how times have changed. Amazing, isn’t it? Today, communication skills, especially business writing, is important when you are working remotely. If you need advice on business writing, send me an email.
