Jack, not his real name, was a nice guy who everyone liked. He was a quick talker and quick thinker. He could get out of any situation and come up smiling. He was articulate and could speak his second language, English, very well.
But when it came to business writing such as press releases or media releases and articles for the company magazine, he struggled. His boss had to constantly revise his work. It got to such a point that he wasn’t really doing his job that he was employed for.
His boss decided that he had to go. Now, it’s very difficult to fire a special category of employee, but it is possible. The boss employed a labour ?lawyer who went through all Jack’s written communication and had solid evidence of his lack of being able to do the writing that he was paid for.
After several written warnings, the lawyer arranged a disciplinary hearing . Jack tried to worm his way out of this one.
He was pathetic as he groveled? ?to escape the axe. He protested. He explained. He begged and he pleaded. But when it’s time to go, it’s time to go.
There was enough evidence against Jack and his poor writing to fire him.
It was sad to see Jack leave the company with his tail between his legs. He was a vibrant, pleasant person and friendly, but he couldn’t do the job that he was paid for. His job was to produce professional business communication.
