A small business owner recently bought a pizzeria and restaurant franchise in a local shopping centre. Not happy with the appearance and interior design of the restaurant, he set about refurbishing it. His contractors started early on a Sunday morning and by the Wednesday evening had completed the entire refurbishment of the restaurant. The power of a new idea for personal success

Power up with the sun's energy.
Power up with the sun’s energy.

In Sydney, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia, Canada, a grade 8 student James Murphy came up with the idea for a solar air heater, constructing the energy-producing equipment with recycled materials. He used about 160 empty soda cans, an old door found at a dump, a big piece of glass and aluminium tape. He included several of his fellow students in the project. The solar air heater they designed and built was part of an initiative to make the school more energy efficient. The project won the Zayed Future Energy Prize for Global High Schools. How long can your small business go on for without meeting a new competitor across the road?

In our small suburb a cake and pastry shop opened up about five or six years ago. The cake and bakery shop has done well, now even delivering from several delivery vans. It’s interesting that this cake shop business is on the main road where it is visible to passer-by traffic.

I suppose the passer-by traffic works well for attracting customers to the business. In fact, the owner of the business sometimes takes out space on a very big outdoor sign to advertise her cakes. The #1 reason why you shouldn’t start a business from an idea (stop now or you’ll lose money)

IMG-20150613-00571An entrepreneur starts a new business from a promising idea. Take the woman who started a double-insulated water bottle. She got the idea while out hiking with her mother. She’s sold 4,000,000 units to date. This business gets a lot of media coverage but is it wise to start something based on an idea?

From the outside it may seem that you can also start a business with a promising idea. But there is a fatal flaw. That flaw is that the idea may appeal to you but will it appeal to a market? It won’t unless others find the resulting product or service attractive and useful in their lives. Too many people come up with products or services based on an idea but experience failure. It’s bank draining and heartbreaking. Continue reading “The #1 reason why you shouldn’t start a business from an idea (stop now or you’ll lose money)”

What do you expect from your business adviser?

Start-ups are driven by the founder but are not a solo act. It’s challenging to plan and implement everything required for a start-up while the environment and market changes, unexpected difficulties crop up and motivation flags when things don’t go as you expected.

It doesn’t matter if your business is in the early stages of development or if you have transformed from the start-up phase into a viable small to medium-sized businesses that is generating turnover and profit, it still may pay to look at a business adviser who can help you steer your business to greater success. But although there is much hype about the need for a business adviser to help you in your start-up or small business not that many founders or small business owners turn to business advisers for advice. Budgets are tight there is a natural inclination or belief that you can do it all yourself. Continue reading “What do you expect from your business adviser?”

Do you have an idea for an online food company?

Healthier food and beverage habits are catching up with companies like McDonald’s and Coca-Cola, says a brief in Bloomberg Business week. Profits of both companies have declined.

Customers of McDonald’s see the company mostly as a “manufacturing plant” and not an eatery.

In the US and China consumers are increasingly skipping sugary beverages, including juices and sports drinks. Continue reading “Do you have an idea for an online food company?”

How a personal tragedy produced a fine coffee roaster

On a Saturday morning I visited a fine morning market at Parys, Free State. It was amazing to see the quality of hand-crafted merchandise on display. This market compared to the best that Johannesburg has to offer. Not only were there fine crafts and arts but there were also fine foods – you would be hard pressed to find anything better elsewhere. I don’t know the history of the market but I’m very hopeful that based on the quality that is being provided that the market will go on from strength to strength. When you face a life-threatening event, will you be prepared?

pulpbat - croppedOne night, just after midnight, I was walking from Clovelly corner to Kalk Bay on my own. No cars were on the main road. No one else was walking at that time in the darkness. I had walked this walk many times before and never felt afraid.

I sensed someone was behind me. I glanced over my shoulder and saw a young man with blonde hair coming towards me with a baseball bat. As he struck with his baseball bat, I turned around and raised my arm in defence. This move prevented the blow from smashing into my skull. I told the young man to leave me alone and go home. Something seemed to change in him and he ran away back towards Clovelly. Continue reading “When you face a life-threatening event, will you be prepared?”

What will lead you to a promising business idea? Exotic, Ninja idea generation techniques or the powers of your own observation?

Graphite pencil drawings strengthen my observation and give me new insights.
Graphite pencil drawings strengthen my observation and give me new insights.

A few weeks ago I came across a woman who had been in accounting but longed to start something of her own. At university she had plans for starting her own business but scrapped them for a “real job”. Some years later she attended a panel on the global water crisis which got her mind thinking. A couple of months later she was hiking with her mother when she thought about the metal bottle she was carrying for water. The water was warm. Then she had an idea to start a metal bottle of her own. In short, to date she has sold 4 million of her double-insulated metal bottles in attractive colours to high-end retail and outdoor stores with the price of each unit ranging from $25 to $45.

Some people think that you need all sorts of exotic idea generation techniques to come up with promising business ideas. They will go for techniques such as Rattlesnakes and Roses, Lotus Blossom, Cherry Split, Idea Streaming Windtunnel and the Gravel Gulch. Yes, these techniques have been well researched and documented but are they the Holy Grail to finding a promising business idea? Do you really need to learn a bunch of techniques to look for a simple business idea that will provide a source of income generation?

The point is that the woman who came up with the new metal, double-insulated water bottle in attractive colours most likely didn’t use these esoteric or exotic techniques. She used her own powers of observation to find an idea that could work for her and that she could commercialise. It was through her own experience, albeit something different such as listening to a panel on the global water crisis, and taking a hike outdoors that led her to her winning idea.

The thing is idea generation techniques can help but you can use your own observation, listening and experiences to come up with promising new business ideas. Either you do things differently such as going to a place where you’ve never been before, taking up a hobby or interest or you simply see things differently. It’s through a change of perspective that you become opportunity conscious and start to see problems, challenges, obstacles, complaints and frustrations as sources of opportunity. By flipping each one around rather than seeing the negative you turn it into a positive and come up with a solution that perhaps others have overlooked.

How do you look for ideas like this?

You may want to spend years looking for an idea or you could speed up the process. “Breakthrough Ideas” does cover some of the practical idea generation methods but it goes into many ways to show you how to think differently and become more opportunity conscious. It’s as close to real magic in finding your promising business idea as you will ever find.
