Thriving Restaurants in a Struggling Economy: A Glimpse into South Africa’s Seaboard Success Stories

Restaurants are thriving along the Western Cape seaboard.

We often hear officials and politicians talk optimistically about South Africa’s economic growth, projecting rates of around 2%. But is that really realistic? Many would argue that the lack of a cohesive economic plan, combined with persistent looting and corruption, points to a growth rate closer to zero—or even below. As one former Liberal Party leader recently stated, meaningful growth cannot occur without a national economic strategy. Yet, despite these hurdles, there’s a fascinating phenomenon happening on a microeconomic level, particularly in one sector: restaurants.

This week, as I drove past a well-known eatery along the Cape seaboard, I couldn’t help but notice the sheer number of cars parked outside, lining both sides of the road. The restaurant was buzzing, brimming with customers. And it wasn’t an isolated case. Many restaurants—whether celebrated for their gourmet offerings or simply for their ambiance—are thriving. Even establishments that focus more on entertainment and liquor sales than on exceptional cuisine are doing remarkably well. Live music events, coupled with liquor prices three to four times retail store prices, seem to be a winning formula.

The reality is, while South Africa grapples with economic stagnation, there’s still a segment of the population with significant disposable income. They’re dining out, enjoying the finer things, and supporting an industry that remains one of the last bastions of independent entrepreneurship. Restaurants, unlike many other small businesses that have been swallowed up by larger conglomerates, still offer a platform for passionate entrepreneurs to shine.

Is it a good time to enter the restaurant business? That depends. Success in this sector hinges on passion, a solid understanding of the market, and the ability to carve out a niche that resonates with customers. Some of South Africa’s most inspiring business stories come from restaurateurs who started small and scaled their success to international markets, opening establishments in the UK or the Middle East.

However, as with any business, preparation is key. Thorough market research, a prime location, and a unique value proposition are non-negotiables. For those who get it right, the rewards can be immense. It’s heartening to see how well certain restaurants are doing—proving that even in a slumbering economy, opportunities abound for those willing to take the leap.
