Hake fried fresh from the trawlers and other fishy urban myths

In a small coastal town several fish and chip shops have sprung up like mackerel jumping out of the sea. There is a urban myth that applies to the freshness of the fish. But before we get into this let’s consider other urban myths.

One is that crime is never as bad in your own neighbourhood as it is elsewhere. Some people believe that their area is safer than others against the avalanche of crime. It’s always worse somewhere else.

Another urban myth is that there are genuine bargains. Just yesterday I was looking into a shop window where there was a sign saying “buy more and save more”. It sounds too good to be true. Many get suckered in buying stuff they don’t need with tempting advertising like this. Don’t believe everything you read.

A political myth is that changing the mayor in Johannesburg is going to change things. It may but Johannesburg is so destroyed that it will take generations to fix it.

Yet another political myth is that the Cape Town municipality makes good decisions. Take a look at their latest decision to build a shelter for homeless people in a prime tourism spot in Muizenberg.

Back to the fishy fresh fish. I have been told on good authority that there is one fish shop in the local community that gets it’s fish fresh from trawlers. It’s an interesting urban myth because there’s no such thing. The hake might be put on ice from the trawlers but that’s rare for a Main Street fish and chip shop.? Their fried hake wouldn’t be sold at the price they are selling it at if it was the case. It would be double the price. No alas, the hake comes straight from a big deep freeze.

In my home the biggest myth is that there is a fairy that goes about during the night cleaning up the place. Aren’t I lucky.
