What are some interesting places to locate a coffee shop?

Coffee shop at a community farm.

I’m sitting at a small coffee shop located on a local community farm on this day which is a Thursday. Volunteers gather to help with the community farming. It makes me think of interesting places to locate a coffee shop. We all know of places like shopping centers, train stations, airports, and places like this. But imaginative people are coming up with new ideas to locate coffee shops in all sorts of places.

The main thing to realize, as someone wanting to start a coffee shop independently, is whatever location you choose, there should be a reasonably high volume of people who visit the area or the complex, or farm, office block, or tourist attraction. Without feet in the door, you aren’t going to have much of a business.

One of the areas that is obvious is office buildings. Now often, a large office building may have a catering company that opens its own coffee shop, but there may be room for an independent if the catering company doesn’t want to run the coffee shop. The other area to look for in office buildings is where there is no catering company, and a coffee shop may be conveniently located in the building. I’ve seen quite a few chains get into buildings this way. I’m reminded of one in Jan Smuts Avenue, Craighall, Johannesburg, where Seattle Coffee has set up in such a building. But there are many other locations. I’ve provided a list below to spark some ideas. But as I say, the main thing is to select a place where there isn’t competition, and there are enough people who visit the area, whether they are office workers, away-from-home workers, and even tourists. If you know your community well, you’ll be able to track these kinds of locations and then set the wheels in motion.

Here are some creative ideas for locating coffee shops beyond the usual places:

  1. Community Farms – As you mentioned, community farms can be great spots for coffee shops, fostering a sense of community and offering fresh, local produce.
  2. Office Buildings – Set up a coffee shop in the lobby or a common area of office buildings to cater to busy professionals.
  3. Morning Markets – A coffee stand at morning markets can attract early risers and shoppers.
  4. Libraries – Many people enjoy reading with a cup of coffee, so a library cafe can be a hit.
  5. Parks and Gardens – Coffee shops in parks or botanical gardens can provide a relaxing atmosphere for visitors.
  6. Universities and Colleges – Students and staff always appreciate convenient access to coffee.
  7. Art Galleries and Museums – Enhance the cultural experience with a coffee break in an art gallery or museum cafe.
  8. Community Centers – Local community centers can serve as hubs for social gatherings, making them ideal locations for coffee shops.
  9. Bookstores – Combining coffee with books is a classic and popular concept.
  10. Tourist Attractions – Coffee shops at popular tourist spots can cater to visitors looking for a quick break.
  11. Hospital Waiting Areas – Providing coffee in hospital waiting areas can be a comfort to patients and visitors.
  12. Sports Complexes – Coffee shops at sports complexes or gyms can cater to both athletes and spectators.
  13. Co-working Spaces – Entrepreneurs and freelancers working in co-working spaces often appreciate having a coffee shop nearby.
  14. Food Trucks – A mobile coffee shop in the form of a food truck can serve different areas on different days.
  15. Beaches – Beachfront coffee shops can cater to beachgoers looking for refreshments.
  16. Residential Areas – Placing coffee shops within residential neighborhoods can provide a convenient spot for locals.
  17. Event Venues – Coffee shops at event venues can cater to guests during conferences, weddings, and other events.

These locations can provide unique experiences and cater to specific crowds, helping to stand out from traditional coffee shop settings.
