It takes special qualities in a person to face difficult times in their lives or in their business. What are these special qualities? Well, let’s think of three scenarios:

A woman in her early fifties has been fired from her job and now she has to look for a new job. This will take time, it will require contacting many people, there will be many no’s before she gets to that one single yes that will open the door. That door is very special and it’s interesting, isn’t it, that it’s not someone you know usually that opens that door, but someone who is a stranger, understands your story and values your skills and you as a person and opens the door for you.

A musician in the starting blocks of his or her career, has to go to a studio and record their first song. Frightening isn’t it? What will carry this musician through? It’s one quality and if he or she doesn’t have it, the recording will not take place.

An artist begins his or her work, learns how to draw and paint, then creates works that he or she cherishes and thinks that the public will like and buy. There are so many artists out there that it seems impossible. The artist has to have special qualities or they won’t get through.

Now we’ve looked at three examples and the common quality needed for all of them is courage: courage to face something new; courage to start something new; courage to go out there, speak to strangers and sell whatever you have of value.

Courage is a kind of strength, an inner strength, the indomitable spirit that resides deep inside of you that will carry you through very hard and rough times. Let’s look at the dictionary definition (from the Oxford Languages Dictionary):

noun: courage

  • the ability to do something that frightens one; bravery.”she called on all her courage to face the ordeal”
  • strength in the face of pain or grief.”he fought his illness with great courage”

We seem to forget how important courage is in our lives, but when the chips are down, when we have to go out there and sell ourselves, when we have to face difficult times, difficult situations, difficult people, it is courage that pulls you through. When you reach the other side, after having been courageous, it will seem like it was easy, but you will know deep down inside that you had to draw deep to find the courage to do what you had to do in life.
