What separates the doers from the talkers when it comes to implementing new business ideas?

Sometimes it could just be that some people like the idea of talking about an idea that they want to implement but never get around to doing something about it. Others may justifiably be uncertain about whether they could really pull off starting something of their own or from scratch. Yet others may not be able to handle the uncertainty that comes with entrepreneurship.

Take one would-be small business person who has a number of sideline activities yet has a brilliant idea for a food business but talks about it all the time. Yet he’s never actually taken one step towards starting the business that he believes has a strong potential market. It’s not that he’s lazy. It’s just that when you remind him of the reality of what he needs to do to start such a business, he backs off.

Another entrepreneur wants to start a small business in the tourism sector but it will take time before he gets planning approval for the property that he wants to build. What’s holding him back is actually practical considerations such as the planning approval, licensing and permits for what he wants to do.

Yet I know of one entrepreneurial couple who started a health treat small business and have got it up and running within months. They already have several retail customers and look forward to expanding their business in 2015.

It’s true that psychological or emotional circumstances can hold you back from starting something of your own. If you’re not feeling comfortable, there may be something wrong with your plan. In this case it’s best to ferret out what is making you uncomfortable and try to deal with the issue or risk.

Some people thrive on high levels of uncertainty but there are those who become fearful and paralysed by uncertainty. If you’re going to start something from scratch, there will be a lot of unknowns. It’s like having all the pieces of a puzzle but not being able to put them together. If you can’t handle uncertainty, you need to find ways to reduce uncertainty such as getting a business adviser or mentor or to guide you.

Some of the practical considerations that may hold you back from starting something of your own include resources such as money and skills. You may know the business domain such as food or computers very well but don’t know how to run a restaurant or service computers. This may mean that you have to go for training or bridge those skills with people who know what they are doing.

Need guidance? If you are wanting to start something of your own boats are being held back because you lack knowledge, then here is a resource that will help you with a roadmap: “Breakthrough Ideas”. It doesn’t provide any guarantees; that’s up to you. How successful you will be will depend on your commitment and the drive and energy that you put into turning your idea into a viable product or service.
