Do you remember the song “What You Waiting For” by Gwen Stefani? It’s a very good question she asks. It’s a question that can be deep because it’s something that we often ask ourselves, what are we waiting for? If you’re a perfectionist, you want everything to be right. You make detailed plans and only then do you act. Life is too short to wait. Think of all the things that you may be waiting for: when to start a small business, when to start a new hobby, when to sell your house, when to go live by the coast, when to ask somebody out who you fancy for a date, and unfortunately when to let go of someone who is really just poison in your life.
The opposite applies too. Sometimes you have to make plans. This will mean that you have to wait. But sometimes your detail planning and waiting will pay off. Think of the times that you jumped right into something and wish you hadn’t. Think about the big mistakes you’ve made in your life because you were impatient. What have you done that you regret? In her song Gwen Stefani also asks the question ? “Why are you standing in one place?” It’s a terrible place to be, to be stuck, going nowhere, drifting, every day the same, no excitement or change in your life. It almost seems that when you are stuck in one place, you dig a deeper hole for yourself and stay more stuck. That’s the enemy of your promise in life. People won’t come up to you and say, I see that you’re stuck. You’ve got to work it out for yourself, all by yourself. This is why insight and self-knowledge is so important.

You can also be stuck in your skills level. Take writing. How good is your writing? Are you any good at it? Does it suck? Are you embarrassed when you type out your messages and emails? Can you even prepare a long document? Do people laugh at you? Or even worse, do people secretly laugh behind your back? Isn’t it about time you got unstuck and did something about your writing? If you’re desperate enough to improve your writing, well, do something about it. That’s where change is so important. You need to change. Gwen Stefani ends her song with the following statement almost like a command, ? “Take a chance you stupid ho”. We all need a kick in the butt to move forward. Either we kick ourselves or someone else will. If someone else doesn’t, life certainly will. We can’t ride through life on poor skills. We have to do something about it.
